What Is Pickleball?
A Beginner’s Guide for Filipinos

The fast-growing sport that is easy to pick up, wildly social, and ready for your first game.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a compact court with solid paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a low net—usually in doubles, always with plenty of laughs.

Whether you have spotted new court lines at your condo, heard friends talking about the kitchen, or simply want a fun way to move more, this guide is your no-pressure introduction. Good news: you do not need to be an athlete to enjoy it.

Pickleball, explained simply

Two or four players hit a lightweight ball over a net, trying to make it bounce twice or force an error. The court is 20 by 44 feet—the same size as a badminton doubles court—so rallies happen close together and everyone stays involved.

The court is small enough for conversation, but every shot still counts.

Why is pickleball taking off in the Philippines?

It is wonderfully social. Doubles is the most common format, and the smaller court means you can play a full game without needing to cover a tennis court. Newcomers can rally within a session, while experienced players find plenty of strategy in placement, patience, and teamwork.

“The best first game is not about winning. It is about making a few clean rallies and wanting one more.”— PickleJoy Academy

For many Filipino players, it fits naturally into an after-work or weekend routine: book a court, split the cost with friends, and play in a group that mixes ages and experience levels. Most communities welcome walk-ins and beginner sessions—ask before you go.

The rules in 60 seconds

  1. Serve underhand. Contact the ball below your waist and send it diagonally into the opposite service box.
  2. Let the return bounce. The serving team must let the return bounce, then the receiving team must let the next shot bounce. This is the two-bounce rule.
  3. Respect the kitchen. The 7-foot area on either side of the net is the non-volley zone. You cannot volley while standing in it or carry momentum into it.
  4. Score on your serve. In traditional doubles, only the serving side scores. Games are commonly played to 11, win by 2.

Beginner tip: Do not worry about memorizing every rule before you play. Learn the serve, two-bounce rule, and kitchen first; a friendly group will help with the rest.

What do you need to play?

Start with comfortable athletic clothes, court shoes with lateral support, and water—especially for outdoor play in Philippine heat. Most venues can rent or lend a paddle and ball for your first visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is pickleball easier than tennis?

Many beginners find it easier to start because the court is smaller, the paddle is easier to handle, and the ball moves more slowly. Both sports reward practice.

Can I play pickleball if I have never played a racket sport?

Absolutely. Learn the basic serve and safety rules, then join a beginner game or introductory clinic.

How much does it cost to start?

Your first game may only require a court share and a rental paddle. Buy your own paddle after you have tried a few sessions and know what feels comfortable.
