The third-shot drop, explained for people who keep missing it

A player mid-swing lifting a soft third-shot drop, the ball in the air just above the net

The third shot is the serving team's first chance to get to the net. Drive it and you usually get it fired back at your feet. Drop it well and you walk in behind it.

Why it keeps failing

Most missed drops are hit too hard from too low a contact point. The shot is a lift, not a push, and it wants a relaxed grip and an unhurried swing that finishes high.

  • Contact the ball out in front, not beside your hip
  • Aim for the peak of the arc over the net, not the line
  • Loosen your grip pressure before the swing, not during
  • Move in only after you see it clear the net

Give it a month

It will lose you points for several weeks. That is the cost of the shot, and it is why so many players abandon it and stay at the baseline. The ones who keep going are the ones you eventually cannot get past.
